About Us

What is the measure of a good surgeon?

What is the measure of a good surgeon? Undoubtedly, it is the care he gives his patient and that patient's family. So often the real medical skills are being able to understand a patient's nervousness, their inability to comprehend medical terminology and their angst about details which seem routine to a surgeon. In today's health marketplace, there are hundreds of choices. But a goods and services approach is not what builds a doctor's reputation. It's the relationship he builds with the patient.

In the mid 1990's, Dr. William Walker visited an old Navy friend and fellow cardiac surgeon, Dr. David Baker who was in practice in Johnson City. After visiting the area, he and his wife Marcy and their two children decided that Johnson City would be a wonderful place to raise their family and serve the community. Although he had a distinguished career as a Navy cardiac surgeon and served as faculty with the University of Tennessee Memphis Medical School, Dr. Walker wanted the opportunity to build a reputation based on patient centered care. Together, Dr. Walker and Dr. Baker founded CVT, CardioVascular & Thoracic Surgery Group located in Johnson City.

As the practice grew, Dr. Walker called one of his old colleagues that he trained while serving the faculty at UT-Memphis. It wasn't long afterward that Dr. H. Andrew "Drew" Poret joined the practice during 2002. Dr. Poret is a specialist in cardiovascular and thoracic surgery who left a thriving practice in Memphis to retreat to the outdoor beauty and friendly hometown atmosphere of the Johnson City community. Dr. Poret brought not only his expertise in cardiac surgery to the practice, but extensive experience and a keen interest in vascular surgery including carotid artery surgery, bypass surgery for blocked arteries in the abdomen, legs and arms, and endovascular surgery.

"Healing requires our medical expertise, but more importantly, healing is the result of care and attention. All of us at CVT are part of that process..." states Dr. Walker. Almost a decade has passed since that fateful visit to a friend in Johnson City. CVT has staid the course offering patients quality care from the office staff to the medical staff. Their reputation for care and state-of-the-art expertise has continued their growth and they now serve the entire region of upper East Tennessee, Southwest Virginia and Western North Carolina.

CVT offers their patients a roster of board certified physicians who are on the cutting edge of cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgery techniques. To be an excellent surgeon, you need to be dedicated to learning and being able to make good decisions. You must be able to take care of your patients the right way and do the right thing," says Dr. Poret.

We're all qualified surgeons, but what I believe makes us excellent surgeons is we all have a need to care for the person. And this extends to their families. Sometimes it's not what we did but how we did it that makes the biggest difference," concludes Dr. Walker.
